I was reading some interesting and thoughtful reflections on our National Day and I decided to post some of them up here. Hopefully some of them will inspire you to become a greater thinking Singaporean.

But still, we celebrate National Day in this luckless month. This year’s theme, ironically, a celebration of the Singapore Spirit. The spirit of you and me. Our spirits chasing that dangling carrot in front of our eyes. A long, long queue outside the neighborhood betting shops. Hoping for luck in this luckless month. Fifty cent quickpick, dreaming a return eight million over, to lift our spirits, to lift us from our luckless lives.

It was apparent many of my school mates sang the school song with a lot more zest than the national anthem. It dawned on me that it was really all about how passionate one felt about being a Singaporean.

His house was brightly lit, and Singapore flags (yes, flags) and red/white decorations abounded. Everyone was wearing red, red wine was being served, and bottles of Archipelago and Tiger floated in a bucket of ice (both are homegrown brews). When the doors of the kitchen opened, out came trays of fresh-from-the-stall Punggol Nasi Lemak, homemade “shio bak”, and various Nonya kuehs and curries. At that very moment, as I contrasted the grim soldiers standing at attention on the parade on the television with the atmosphere of the party, the true meaning of “Celebrating the Singapore Spirit” occurred to me.
