I just shifted my entire website over to a new webhost.

Nearlyfreespeech.net

I keep hearing problems that a lot of you faced in visiting my blog. Previously I chose Nearlyfreespeech.net as they are the only webhost that charges by the amount of traffic and storage you used. So for a small website like mine, the fees are negligible. Unfortunately, some of our local ISPs seem to have problems routing their traffic. So for users of certain ISP, including the one I am subscribed to now, requires the users to specifically set a proxy in their browser. Now this wouldn’t be a problem if this is the standard implementation for all users. Frustratingly, most users never set the proxy server since you can visit 90% of all other websites just using the direct connection!

Of course the issue is not so simple. All connections are technically monitored and they pass thru the proxy servers in our ISP. So what you think is a direct connection is actually a transparent pass-thru proxy server! Every thing you read has thus been filtered and sanitised.

Hence it forces me to conclude that the only reason why I was facing problems was because the webhost Nearlyfreespeech.net, as their name implies, advocates a stronger freedom of speech policy than most and they are thus marked out for more monitoring through another content-filtering proxy. Hence trying to access my website through the transparent proxy would never work since it is already blocked.

A Small Orange

Well in any case, I have shifted since the blog is useless when I cannot reach out half of my audience. So instead of Nearlyfreespeech.net, I am now on A Small Orange. Hope this new home is a good one!

P.S. I am still shifting as of now. Some things do not work yet. Gallery and the forum will be up later. Please be patient!

NB: If you cannot see the Nearlyfreespeech logo up there, then congratulations, your internet is being filtered…
