I was surprised to read a well-written and researched piece by one of my former students on the current Myanmar bloodshed. You can read his article “Singapore Debt of Honour” here on TheOnlineCitizen.
Currently, one Singaporean who has been working in Myanmar for the past 11 years has been shot with rubber bullets on his way to his office. You can see pictures of the rubber bullets wound here. The same news can be seen reported here on Straits Times, curiously without the photo of the bullet casing.
Next time when you travel to some 3rd world dictatorship country, be careful because you might be shot with bullets Made in Singapore.
P.S. The Dirty List on the Burma Campaign UK website indicates several Singaporean companies that does business in Burma. It is important to note that most of those Singaporean companies are our major banks - DBS, UOB and OCBC. Our banks provide banking services to the Myanmar military regime because other international banks do not do business with a military regime that have been charged with “crimes against humanity” by the UN.
P.S. Of course this is nothing compared to the Japanese journalist Nagai Kenji who was shot while covering the protest. The force of the bullet at such a close range caused the journalist to fly through the air, punctured through his lower back, pass through his heart and exited the body. He was left to die on the street.
