Obama’s Acceptance Speech

Posted by kifo on August 29th, 2008

Obama’s speech at the Democratic Party Nomination was a terrific masterly performance. Whoever can learn to speak like that can move mountains. I admit I was moved to tears.

I can embed the video here but it is still best to go watch it at BBC’s website. Got see it here!

“This country of ours has more wealth than any nation, but that’s not what makes us rich. We have the most powerful military on Earth, but that’s not what makes us strong. Our universities and our culture are the envy of the world, but that’s not what keeps the world coming to our shores.

Instead, it is that American spirit - that American promise - that pushes us forward even when the path is uncertain; that binds us together in spite of our differences; that makes us fix our eye not on what is seen, but what is unseen, that better place around the bend.

That promise is our greatest inheritance. It’s a promise I make to my daughters when I tuck them in at night, and a promise that you make to yours - a promise that has led immigrants to cross oceans and pioneers to travel west; a promise that led workers to picket lines, and women to reach for the ballot.”

In defense of Science

Posted by kifo on August 23rd, 2008

You must have read the story that is being passed around in blogs about this science professor who started his first lecture in the school year by trying to explain the problem science has with religion? Well other than the fact that the story is completely make believe, I think I would like to point out certain scientific errors in the story that should be pointed out, especially to many of you who are currently studying about science in your lessons.

  1. To prove that the professor has a brain, nowadays we usually do a CT scan. Here is a CT scan image. There is no need to cut up any head to prove it. To think that this professor cannot think of this example perhaps goes to prove he has no brain after all.
  2. In physics, there is no such thing as physical heat. Heat is defined as the transfer of energy from one body to another due to temperature difference. In science, we do not have “lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, etc.”
  3. No light is not darkness, but it is only a low level of visible light. Light as you have studied is defined as an electromagnetic radiation. When visible light drops off, there is still infra-red and gamma radiation. You can make darkness darker by screening out more and more of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  4. Is it possible to reach zero temperature? I hope you have already learnt that it is not possible to reach zero kelvin as it is a theoretical limit, and not a physical one. Total darkness so as to say will only be possible when we reach zero temperature.
  5. Is it possible to prove evolution by looking? Looking for fossils is a good way.

The Resident Tourist

Posted by kifo on August 16th, 2008

I just spent the past three hours glued to my monitor reading an online comic by our local comic artist, Troy Chin. His 3 part series, The Resident Tourist, is an authentic, heartfelt and totally Singaporean exploration of what it means to be living on this tiny red dot. I recommend everyone to read it now.
