Looking with a fresh perspective

I will be having a practical session with a few photographers from Publication next Monday. We will be focusing on taking photographs of people and we will probably be going around the school in the afternoon snapping away. This will be an excellent opportunity for me to guide them on how to go about getting a good photograph as well as instructing them on the use of the school’s Nikon D70 DSLR.

Likewise, if anyone reading this blog is interested in joining us for this session, do approach me so that I can try to slot you in. You must bring along your own digital camera for this session.

Announcement: Deadline for Romance

Posted by kifo on February 28th, 2006

As I have announced to some Sec 2 classes yesterday, the DEADLINE for the Romance project is set for next Friday 10 March which is the last day for Term 1. As I have mentioned before, any team that submits their artwork by the deadline will get rewarded with extra marks equivalent of ONE GRADE. The total marks for this project is 30 marks.

To submit your project please observe the following:

  1. Complete your papier-mache model. Paint and decorate it to the best of your ability.
  2. Attached or incorporate a note or card with the poem or quote nicely written or typed together with your artwork.
  3. Bring along a sheet of A4 size paper (preferably plain) with you to the art room. Fold the paper in half, write the title of the artwork on the bottom left corner and all the names and index number of the team members on bottom right corner. Find a space on your class shelf to place down the paper and your artwork on top of it.
  4. If you submit in your work earlier than on the deadline, it will be a good idea to inform me when you have done that so that I can assess your project earlier and keep it in another location so that it won’t get into any accidents later when everyone is rushing to hand in.

I wish everyone all the best in completing their artwork!

Late work…

Posted by kifo on February 24th, 2006

Collecting late work is frustrating and tiring business. Late work is bad for everyone because

  1. while everyone is progressing with the new art piece, some of us are still slogging with the overdue work in class. Hence we will usually fail to fully appreciate the current lesson.
  2. lessons are usually planned in sequence. By not completing the earlier work, we will miss out on the necessary practice and experience that the homework was supposed to have given us in the first place.
  3. the teacher gets frustrated collecting and chasing the late assignments. When he/she gets down to marking the late pieces, there is already a bad impression.
  4. in a situation where late submissions are rampant, more and more students will take advantage of it. Hence sometimes unpleasant draconian measures which involves heavy penalties on late work are introduced to reverse the situation. Lose-lose for everyone.

The same applies to any other subject in school. That said, I really understand and sympathise with some of the workload that students have nowadays. Other than Art, students have tons of other homework and exams and other activities to prepare for. I also do not want to rush students to finish a work hurriedly and therefore do it badly. As an example, some of the bookmarks that were submitted late were actually quite good.

Therefore, from now on, to encourage students to hand in ON TIME, I will award those students who hand in their artwork promptly the equivalent of ONE GRADE in their marks for that work. Hence, if the assignment has gotten 70 marks out of 100, the student will get 5 marks more. If the work is 14 marks out of 20, the student will get 1 mark more. A 100/100 artwork will not be able to get any more marks though.

We shall monitor the results of this new scheme at the next progress report!
